NHS Digital publishes over a thousand indicators covering quality through to population health and outcomes of treatments.

The Indicator Portal is a free tool that provides valuable information for health and care professionals.

Commentary documents accompanying selected clinical indicators can be viewed in our data catalogue.

Our Indicator Assurance Service ensures that national health and social care indicators are well defined, and based on good data with clear methodologies.

If you would like to receive updates when new or updated indicators have been added you can email to be added to our mailing list.

The Indicator Portal allows you to:

  • understand how population health challenges have changed over time
  • compare an area's demographic profile with other regions and national averages

  • understand current health inequalities and explore the range of factors that influence them
  • inform annual health reviews and audits

  • use indicators for service planning and performance management
